TUCSON, Arizona, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Sheriff's deputies and FBI agents fanned out along highways, vacant lots and remote dwellings of southern Arizona on Wednesday, combing the desert landscape for clues to the fate of U.S. television journalist Savannah Guthrie's abducted elderly mother.

As the search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie stretched into its 11th day, a law enforcement official briefed on the case told Reuters that investigators were running forensic tests on a newly discovered black latex glove, looking for fingerprints and possible DNA samples.

The New York Post on Wednesday posted video and photos of FBI personnel taking possession of a glove they had found discarded on a roadside about 1.5 miles from the elder Guthrie's home, where she was presumed kidnapped for ransom.

It was not clear whether the glove collected as evidence matched the pair worn by an armed man in a ski mask seen in video footage authorities released on Tuesday showing the unknown intruder tampering with Guthrie's doorbell camera at about the time police say she was taken.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen on January 31 when family dropped her off at her home following an evening dinner with them, and relatives reported her missing the following day, authorities said.
PEERING THROUGH THE MASK

As police and forensic analysts on foot scoured a search zone on the outskirts of Tucson seeking more physical evidence, the law enforcement official said the newly released video was undergoing "advanced analytics" in an effort to produce a better glimpse of the masked stranger in the images.

Investigators are "likely attempting to identify facial features/markers through the fabric" of the ski mask, a former FBI agent explained. "This can be done using special mathematical techniques and potentially AI given recent advancements in the field.”

Techniques involve measuring the shape of and distance between a person's eyes, ears, mouth, nose, jaw, cheeks and forehead to establish a facial geometry that can be fed through databases in search of a match.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has said the elder Guthrie had extremely limited mobility and could not have wandered off far from home unassisted, leading investigators to conclude early on that she had been abducted by force.
THOUSANDS OF TIPS

Traces of blood found on her front porch were confirmed by DNA tests to have come from Guthrie, officials said last week. Law enforcement and family members have described her as being in frail health and in need of daily medication to survive.

At least two purported ransom notes have surfaced since Nancy Guthrie vanished, both of them delivered initially to news media outlets and setting two deadlines that have come and gone. But no proof of life is known to have surfaced following her abduction.

Guthrie, 54, co-anchor of the popular NBC News morning show "Today," has posted several video messages with her brother and sister, appealing to their mother's captors for her return, pleading for the public's help in solving the case, and even asserting a willingness to meet ransom demands.

An apparent break in the case came late on Tuesday when the sheriff's office announced that a "subject" of the investigation had been detained for questioning following a traffic stop in Pima County. But the person taken into custody was later released without being charged.

The sheriff's department also said that its deputies and an FBI forensic team conducted a court-authorized search of a "location" in Rio Rico, Arizona, about 60 miles south of Tucson near the Mexico border. The man who said he was detained told reporters he lived at the address that was searched.

Hundreds of sheriff's deputies and FBI agents have been assigned to the case, receiving nearly 18,000 phone tips since February 1, more than a quarter of those within the last 24 hours, the sheriff's office said on Wednesday.

New activity in crypto wallet tied to Nancy Guthrie ransom note as suspect images surface

 Arizona’s Family can confirm at least one transaction was made around 5 p.m. Arizona time on Tuesday to the Bitcoin address that was detailed in the ransom note sent to sister station, KOLD 13 News, and other outlets.

Arizona’s Family is not disclosing the amount that was sent at this time.

The activity comes after investigators released disturbing new surveillance video earlier in the day as the search for the mother of network TV news anchor Savannah Guthrie entered its second week in southern Arizona.

On Tuesday, law enforcement released video and still images of an armed man captured on a Nest camera outside the 84-year-old’s Catalina Foothills home. The videos show the masked person at Guthrie’s door wearing a jacket, gloves, pants and carrying a backpack.

The FBI confirmed to Arizona’s Family that they believe the person is a man and have identified him as a suspect in her disappearance.

Video shared on X by FBI Director Kash Patel shows the man cupping the camera before walking to the front yard. He then returns to the front door, holding a small flashlight in his mouth and attempting to cover the doorbell camera with what appears to be a plant or flowers.

Investigators say the man was armed. The videos appear to show a holstered firearm on his waistband.

Karl de la Guerra, an international security consultant, said the first thing he noticed in the video was how the suspect was dressed.

“This individual is more than likely to move and walking at his natural pace. Which means someone is going to recognize that,” de la Guerra said. ”He looks like he’s moving very calmly, almost without a definite purpose. When you look at the history of kidnappings and abductions, those are individuals that generally hit the house with a defined purpose, with a mission."

The man appears to be an amateur and de la Guerra said he lacks organization.

“I mean, doorbells like this are a norm nowadays. So you would anticipate that this is something you’re going to come up on right away. It almost, he almost, the individual here, male or female, almost acts as if it’s an afterthought of, oh, there’s a doorbell there,” he said.

The gloves also appeared to be thick with heavy linings, making it hard to grab things or a person.

“Well, judging by the demeanor of this individual, I doubt that he went and got a dress ensemble specifically for this event,” de la Guerra said.

What stood out as well was the positioning of the pistol.

“I’ve never seen a pistol worn in that manner by anyone who knew anything about firearms. What does that tell you then? This is very much ad hoc; that this is just an individual that really didn’t have a plan,” de la Guerra said.

“Over the last eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been working closely with our private sector partners to continue to recover any images or video footage from Nancy Guthrie’s home that may have been lost, corrupted or inaccessible due to a variety of factors, including the removal of recording devices. The video was recovered from residual data located in backend systems,” Pima County Sheriff’s Department posted in a statement.

“Working with our partners - as of this [Tuesday] morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance,” the department added.

The sheriff’s department later stated that they will not be hosting any press conferences at this time, and Sheriff Chris Nanos will not be doing one-on-one interviews.

Authorities scouring scenes

As the investigation continued into its 10th day, authorities went back to the Tucson home of Annie Guthrie, Nancy’s oldest daughter. Crews with Arizona’s Family sister station, KOLD 13 News, witnessed groups of FBI agents and Pima County sheriff’s deputies going door-to-door in the neighborhood.

Last weekend, authorities first searched Annie’s home, which is roughly four miles away from Nancy’s house. Three unmarked vehicles were parked in the driveway, and law enforcement left the home with a bag. Crews with 13 News reported seeing flashes through the windows, possibly from authorities taking photographs.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said it will continue to maintain a presence at Nancy Guthrie’s home for security reasons at the request of the Guthrie family.
Savannah’s plea

Shortly after the photos and videos were released, Savannah Guthrie shared the photos on her Instagram, asking anyone with information to call law enforcement.

“We believe she is still alive. Bring her home,” she shared.
Disappearance leads to reported ransom notes

Guthrie was last seen on Jan. 31 after being dropped off at her Catalina Foothills home and was reported missing the next day after missing church.

In the early morning hours of Feb. 1, her doorbell camera disconnected, and her software detected a person on the camera. Her pacemaker app also showed it disconnected from her phone.

Reported ransom notes concerning Guthrie were sent to several Arizona news stations, including Arizona’s Family sister station, KOLD 13 News. The first note reportedly demanded a “large sum of money” with a deadline set for last Thursday. The second note allegedly contained a Monday deadline at 5 p.m.

A new video plea from Savannah was released hours before the 5 p.m. Monday deadline. The video didn’t mention the alleged ransom; instead, Savannah shared her family still believes their mom is out there and is hearing everyone’s prayers.

“We need your help. Law enforcement is working tirelessly, around the clock, trying to bring her home. Trying to find her. She was taken and we don’t know where. And we need your help,” Savannah said in Monday’s message.

The FBI has been asking for the public’s help on digital billboards up in several major cities in Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico. A $50,000 reward has been offered for information.

At least nine dead in mass shooting at school and home in Canada, police say

  At least nine people have been shot and killed at a high school and a residential property in a rural mountain town in the Canadian province of British Columbia, in the country’s deadliest school shooting in decades.

Police found six people dead and dozens injured when they responded to reports of an active shooter at the school in Tumbler Ridge, a tight-knit town in the province’s northeast, around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday local time.

Another person died while being transported to hospital, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said.

Two more people were found dead at a residence believed to be connected to the incident, police said in a statement.

The suspected shooter was found deceased at the school with “what appears to be a self-inflicted injury,” said police.

The suspect was described as a brown-haired woman wearing a dress, in an emergency alert which went out to residents’ phones, according to CNN affiliate CBC News.

Two victims were airlifted from the school to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries. About 25 other people with non-life-threatening injuries are being treated at a local medical centre, police said.

Tumbler Ridge Secondary School has 175 students from Grades 7 to 12, according to the province’s website.

Police have not yet determined a motive for the shooting, Superintendent Ken Floyd, North District commander, said in a press conference Tuesday.

“We are not in a place now to be able to understand why or what may have motivated this tragedy,” Floyd said.

“I think we will struggle to determine the ‘why,’ but we will try our best to determine what transpired,” he added.

It is not yet clear how many of the dead were children, or what, if any, their connections were to the shooter, Floyd said.

Police have identified the shooter but will not be releasing details for privacy reasons, Floyd said. He declined to say whether the shooter was a child.

Tumbler Ridge is a town of about 2,400 people at the base of the Rocky Mountains in western Canada, about 680 kilometers (422 miles) from the US border.

Police do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public. The earlier alert asking the public to shelter in place was lifted at 5:45 p.m. local time.

Mass shootings are extraordinarily rare in Canada, which has much stricter gun laws than the US. According to the Small Arms Research project, there are 121 firearms for every 100 residents in the US, compared with an estimated 35 guns per 100 residents for its northern neighbor.

School shootings of this scale are almost unheard of. In 1989, a gunman murdered 14 women at École Polytechnique in Montréal, in a massacre that prompted a national reckoning about violence against women and led to tighter gun laws.

It is illegal to purchase an assault-style rifle in Canada – the class of weapons used in several of the deadliest school shootings in the US.

Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School will be closed for the rest of the week, a notice on the local school district website said.

British Columbia Premier David Eby called the shooting a “devastating and unimaginable tragedy” in a press conference on Tuesday evening.

“We can’t imagine what the community is going through. But I know it’s causing us all to hug our kids a little tighter tonight.”

Larry Neufeld, the provincial member of parliament for Peace River South, which encompasses Tumbler Ridge, called the shooting “tragic and deeply disturbing” in a statement posted to social media.

“This is a small, close-knit town, and the impact of an event like this is felt by everyone,” Neufeld said.

Authorities detain individual for questioning in connection with Nancy Guthrie's abduction

 The man, who has not yet been identified, was reportedly headed toward the US-Mexico border when he was pulled over in Rio Rico by Pima County sheriff’s deputies who had been trailing him, law enforcement sources told The Post.

The sheriff’s office said the individual is being questioned about Nancy’s disappearance following the traffic stop in Rio Rico, a tiny border community just 16 miles from Mexico. Sources did not know if he was trying to flee across the border.

He doesn’t appear to be a member of the Guhtrie family, according to TMZ, and hasn’t been called a suspect.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that federal investigators are probing “persons of interest” during an appearance on Fox News Tuesday night.

“Without polluting the investigation, I will say we have made substantial progress in these last 36-48 hours, thanks to the technical capabilities of the FBI and our partnerships and I do believe we are looking at people who, as we say, are persons of interest,” Patel said.

The development follows the release of video and several images of an armed, masked kidnapper at the doorstep of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie. 

Patel credited the footage as a break-through in the case coming 10 days into the frantic search for Nancy, who remains missing. 

“Not only were we able to get this type of information [Ring doorbell footage], but we were able to exploit information pursuant to our private sector partner engagement that showed us that there might be persons of interest in and around the area related to this event,” he told Fox News’ Sean Hannity.

“With any investigation, you are a person of interest until you’re either eliminated or you’re actually found to be the culprit or the culprits involved, and that’s the stage we’re at right now,” he added.

Despite the promising development, Patel remained cautiously optimistic, saying he didn’t want to give the public “a falase hope.”

“The FBI is making advancements, and I don’t want the people out there to have a false hope of what we are putting forward, but we have made significant steps in executing this investigation,” he added. 

It’s not immediately clear if authorities have determined whether Nancy is alive or unharmed. 

The major development comes more than a week after she vanished. She was last seen on Jan. 31 when she was dropped off at her Tucson home by her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, following a dinner with him and her daughter, Annie.

US cuts Bangladesh tariffs to 19% in new deal, no reciprocal tax on certain goods | World News

 

Bangladesh has secured a lower 19 per cent US tariff under a trade agreement signed by the two countries on Monday, with exemptions for certain textiles and garments produced using US materials.

Muhammad Yunus, chief adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, said Washington had “committed to creating a mechanism” that would allow select Bangladeshi textile and apparel goods made with US-produced cotton and man-made fibre to enter the US market at zero reciprocal tariff.

The White House said Bangladesh has agreed to grant significant preferential market access to US industrial and agricultural products, including chemicals, medical devices, machinery, motor vehicles and parts, soy products, dairy items, beef, poultry, tree nuts and fruit.

It added that Bangladesh will also relax non-tariff barriers by accepting US vehicle safety and emissions standards, recognising US Food and Drug Administration certifications, and lifting import restrictions on remanufactured goods.
BANGLADESH TO BOOST US PURCHASES

The two sides also highlighted recent and planned commercial deals, including aircraft procurement, roughly $3.5 billion in purchases of US agricultural goods, and an estimated $15 billion in US energy product imports over 15 years.

According to the 32-page US-Bangladesh agreement released by the Office of the US Trade Representative, Biman Bangladesh Airlines plans to buy 14 Boeing aircraft, with options for additional orders. The airline had first announced a Boeing purchase last July while negotiations were underway.

Bangladesh will also acquire an unspecified quantity of US military equipment and curb purchases from certain countries.

The South Asian, low-wage economy also pledged to uphold internationally recognised labour rights and strengthen environmental safeguards.

Yunus said the deal followed nine months of negotiations that began in April last year.

In August, Bangladesh secured a cut in US tariffs on its exports to 20 per cent, down from the 37 per cent initially proposed by Washington, offering relief to the country’s apparel exporters.
INDIA STILL NEGOTIATING

Bangladesh’s tariff rate is slightly higher than the 18 per cent rate for imports from India agreed last week by the Trump administration, though that arrangement still requires further negotiations before it is finalised.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Bangladesh is the first South Asian country to complete a reciprocal trade deal with the US, calling it “a meaningful step forward in opening markets, addressing trade barriers, and creating new opportunities for American exporters.”

The ready-made garments sector remains the backbone of Bangladesh’s economy, accounting for more than 80 per cent of export earnings, employing about 4 million workers, and contributing roughly 10 per cent to gross domestic product.

Bangladesh goes to the polls on Thursday to elect new leadership after being run by an interim government since August 2024, when former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India, where she remains.

Under tariff schedules released by the USTR, Bangladesh will reduce high duties to zero on several farm and food products, including poultry, pork, seafood, rice, corn and cereal grains, once the agreement takes effect.

Other tariffs will be cut by 50 per cent at the outset and then phased down to zero over five or 10 years, depending on the product. For instance, the current 53.6 per cent duty on almonds will fall to zero over a decade, while the same rate on four-stroke auto rickshaw engines will be eliminated within five years.

Most US tariffs will be set at a flat 19 per cent, but Bangladeshi-made pharmaceutical ingredients and aircraft parts will be exempt from duties, in line with treatment extended to other countries that have signed tariff-reduction deals with President Donald Trump’s administration.
